I got this Kalita Wave from prima
(http://prima-coffee.com/sites/default/files/kalita-wave-style-set.jpg)
The flat bottomed cone is supposed to be a lot more consistent. This is a cool set, goes to 5 cups, (tasse, about 20oz) would make a great traveling roadshow lottery. Makes a nice cup!
EDIT: Now that you guys helped me find the filters, we are on. I will get 100 white filters from wreckingball to go into the kit, and of course the 25 or so brown ones that come with it.
Some of this next part might seem a little familiar, I shamelessly copied one of the B|travelling road show threads:
Need 10 to play. No money now, should be approx $11 each by the time I figure in the paypal fees and shipping to me.
Once we are all registered and paid, I will ask one of the regulars better half to pick us a number. That number will be our winner and gets it last so there isn't a need to ship it on.
Rules
1. The roadshow includes:
- Kalita 5 cup style w/ brown filters
- 100 white papers filters
- stainless steel phin dripper (with logo!)
- 3 each of the disposable Kalita paper pourovers
- 1 each of the other disposable pourovers from sweet marias
2. try it out and post your results
3. ship it on to the next person.
4. winner gets both kit pourover devices and remaining paper filters
Disposable paper pourovers? Well, since I will have to order from Wrecking Ball anyway, I figured we should also give this a try:
Since there are 30, each participant gets 3 to try.

They do, but they are the smaller version, and they are brown.

Sign me up, too, please! I've been meaning to try out the Wave for a while now, and I love the look of this set in particular.
As for the Kantan drippers, I already know those are nice--though they take some dexterity to load with coffee sans spillage. I'll donate my 3 to the winner. Here's a post I made about them a while back:

This morning I wanted to take some pictures and get some opinions about the set, but didn't want to offend certain club members with my usual worse than horrible photography in my dim kitchen. So I temporarily stripped the plastic collar off the Wave and headed down to this great little bistro that opened up a few months ago.
They were pretty busy, but are super nice and very, very interested in good coffee. I brought in some home roasts I thought might tempt them, and picked a strategic spot to pose the set.

Worked. Houston, we have interest... (to be continued)
-
My friend James steps up for the first batch. A 10 day rested Yemen, 40g for the 600ml 5 cup setting with a pourover grind.
The brown filter gets a thorough rinse. The first question, does it matter if the filter bunches a bit? We agree that we have no idea. The filter sits a bit above the bottom of the 3 hole glass cone, so we decide it isn't very critical.
Bloom looks nice, and smells great.
Away we go, using a slow pour.
-
We decide the unfamiliar Yemen may not be the best way to compare the dripper, so 40g of Panama washed Elida to complicate and simplify.
Amanda checks the pour, while I test her concentration with random jokes I remember from 3rd grade. The dripper performed very well.

-
About the only real complaints we shared were post brew. Poor pouring performance; the flask likes to dribble and it doesn't have a lid.
It tasted very nice, clean with good nuance and tamed brightness from decent temp stability. It has great flow, cleans up easy and looks great, but still seems to need a sniper kettle and a bit of skill.

My thanks to the Eggshell Bistro for being such good sports, may your vacpots never stall!
-
We still need two more to start the roadshow!
I hope you guys liked the pictures, I had a few cameraman reflections in there, but otherwise I thought they came out better than I expected!
-
Bump, the white filters from wreckingball (and the disposable kantan pourover filters) are here.
I'm liking the 5 cup Kalita Style enough to buy you guys a fresh one for the roadshow. (this one stays with me!)
I've also got some packable tea-bags that are large enough for coffee doses on the way, was thinking about using them as a cupping aid. If they show up in time I will be sure to include a few for each of the participants to try.
I also scored some of the disposable pourovers sweet marias shows on their website here:
http://www.sweetmarias.com/sweetmarias/coffee-brewers/filtercones/single-serve-brewer-filters.html (http://www.sweetmarias.com/sweetmarias/coffee-brewers/filtercones/single-serve-brewer-filters.html)
I will throw in enough that everyone can check one of these out too.
Still two spots open! Sign up and we can get the show on the road!

I've never figured out who these are for? No one I know would travel with preground coffee, and if you're going to drag a grinder along how much room would a pour over cone & filters take? I had a prof who might've said, "This is a solution in search of a problem."
-
Well, admittedly they are pretty limited in use, but I like to stay within shouting distance of good coffee at all times.
A Kyocera hand grinder and a pack of these things would fit pretty easily in a laptop bag, (or even a coat pocket) most offices/hotels/relatives houses have hot water available. I could also get a little parallel with a bunch of disposables, impress the natives, delegate, and not spend much time cleaning up afterward.
In the same situations a cone would likely add bulk and be fairly damp after use, and I think I would miss having a decent pouring kettle. A small french press wouldn't be very pretty given the grind capabilites of the Kyocera, and would add bulk/weight. The mypressi raises too many eyebrows during transport and needs constant gas cartridge ammo and cleanup time.
They must not let you out a whole lot, Tex! ;D

Final bump for the roadshow...
If we don't get enough people by the weekend, we will go to plan "B" - ship a pourover goody box around for everyone to review without buy-in or lottery, each participant just pays for shipping onto the next guy.

We could always just bump the price up a little bit to each participant to cover the cost. A little bit higher investment is worth the better odds for me.

I should be able to get the box packed and in the mail by tomorrow. (friday 5/10) I hope everyone enjoys the roadshow, thanks to everyone who participated. I look forward to reading everyone's comments!
-
Woohoo! Thanks much. Love it. The coffee gods are smiling on me lately, it seems...
-
Darn it, just realized I forgot to throw in the weird herbal artichoke tea for Jason.
Hopefully the box survived the trip well, USPS tracking shows that mean Kalita box has delivered to mean cat!
-
Box arrived safe and sound, sans atichoke tea.
<sarcarsm> Artichoke tea sounds so yummy and I'm sorry that I will miss the opportunity to try it.</sarcasm> :P ;D

In a karmic culmination of events, it seems the Lido grinder also arrive to me today. Looks like I'm ready to brew some coffee.
-
Nick Cho just posted this Kalita Wave video.
Kalita Wave Brewing : Intensive on Vimeo ([url]http://vimeo.com/42382657[/url])
Nice! Saw that last night. I think I'd start with 1.5 turns CCW on the LIDO when dialing in the Wave.
-
The video forgot to include the following statement: 'The Kalita Wave makes good coffee... if you can find the filters for it.'
-
Too much effort to make a 2nd class cup of coffee.
-
Too much effort to make a 2nd, class cup of coffee.
It really isn't very hard to make a 2nd, or even a 3rd cup!
-
So Jason, what's the verdict?
-
So Jason, what's the verdict?
Thumbs up.
The Kalita stayed at my work place for the entire time of its visit and was put through the paces my a coworker and myself. Luckily the Lido grinder showed up tat the same time as the Kalita, so I was able to use the grinder all week.
I really like the design of the unit. Very classy looking. It also made a very nice cup of coffee. Can't say it out shined any other pour over method by a large margin, but the cup did seem to pick up a small nuance here and there that didn't come through with the Clever Coffee Dripper (the only brewer I had at work for comparison).
The Kenya coffee was also very good. Unfortunately it was liked so much that there was not enough to send back on the road, but I did throw in a bag of the Kona Earth to make up for the loss.
-
The box has arrived safe and sound with a bag of Mean Cat Coffee's Kona Earth tagging along. Since I am already at home and the baby is asleep I decided to give the Kantan single cup brewer a try. First attempt was 15g of coffee, but as soon as I hit it with water it overflowed so straight into the compost bin it went. Second attempt was scaled back to 12g and then I pulse poured 200g of water and the cup is rather pleasing. I'm not a big fan of disposable or one use type items, but for certain occasions I could definitely see these being a viable option. The only downside is the Kantan is seriously small, yielding just over 6 oz brewed.
-
Any early reports on this one yet? Prima has a set for $70 shipped that looks interesting...
-
I have been using the Kalita for a few days now and I really like the results. I haven't done a side-by-side with my other pourovers yet, but will. The only thing I could nitpick on the brew setup is that there is a lot of glass for me to have an accident with. The carafe feels pretty sturdy, but the filter holder is just asking to get knocked into the sink or off the counter.
-
I have been really enjoying the Kalita pour over. I don't feel that it outperforms my Hario V60 in the cup, but the brewing process itself seems a bit easier. I will own a Kalita at some time in the future, but with two kids and being a bit clumsy myself in the mornings I don't think I will buy this exact setup. It definitely is quite the looker and backs up those great looks with a great cup. Alas, it is time to send this puppy on to Chris who I'm sure will give us all sorts of excellent feedback.
As for the rest of the items in the box, both of the disposable single cup brewers function well, but are impractical for just about any application I can foresee for myself. I did not use the phin brewer (or whatever its called) because I already own one that is nearly identical. I will get this boxed up and on the way to the yackster this week.
-
Chris, try the pulse pour technique as an alternative to a slow constant pour. I though I got the best flavor and body by filling the filter about an inch and a half above the bloom zone and then letting it fall back down before repeating again (approximately 50g of water per pulse pour). I hope the Panama Elida wasn't too pooched for ya! ;D
-
... I hope the Panama Elida wasn't too pooched for ya! ;D
I would suggest that having one Dave pooch roasts is sufficient for the entire club.

The Kalita Wave arrived while I was away this past week, so I I tried it out today. I used 45g of the Wote Konga that Yakster sent to make ~600ml of finished coffee. (Thanks Chris!!). Without using a pouring kettle ( I don't have one and have never felt the need to buy one), the bed is extremely easy to keep even. This thing is really cool!!! The coffee turned out fanatastic. I am a fan for sure and I will give a detailed review in a few days.
Thanks Todd for putting this together.

Did I jinx myself?
Just ordered the Kalita Wave Style with 200 filters from the Prima Coffee site, I'll use it at work and bring home my latest Chemex.
Chris,
Using the Kalita Wave once, I really am a fan already. I'll most likely be ordering one in a few weeks also. It seems to be an ideal size for a work environment.

Next monday the Kalita will be making its way to Hank. I've been using it daily and I have a feeling I'll miss it when its gone. So much so I'll probably be buying one next week. I really like the flat bottom filters and the 3 drain holes in the filter holder. Excellent extractions. I've been using 40 grams after my initial attempt at 45. 40 seems like the max to me. I've been too lazy and out of it when I wake up to weigh the water, so I've been filling it to the 5 cup line every day and weighing the coffee the night before. I'm really glad for this roadshow as I most likely wouldn't have tried this brewer out without it. ;D
-
The Kalita is heading to Hank. I packed it last night and missed it this morning already. It produces a very nice cup and is very forgiving compared to other pourover methods.
-
Bump for an update!
-
Sorry for the delay... Ready to send it out to J. Jirehs Roaster.

-
the Kalita is in the house... I will be giving it a full work out then sending it on ASAP (maybe by the weekend)
-
tyme... I need an address
nice little brewer.. I think my money would be better spent on a slightly smaller chemex (probably with handle) to go with the kone.. but this Kalita does make a nice cup of coffee..
its ready to ship on Tuesday
-
Just curious: how many Kalita filters are/will be left, roughly? I'm thinking I might want to buy more in anticipation of this thing's arrival.
-
Any idea where to get the filters? Olympia, wrecking ball, and prima are out of the 185 filters.
-
These would probably work:
http://www.orphanespresso.com/Tiamo-K02-Wave-Style-185-Fluted-Flat-Bottom-Paper-Coffee-Filters_p_4045.html (http://www.orphanespresso.com/Tiamo-K02-Wave-Style-185-Fluted-Flat-Bottom-Paper-Coffee-Filters_p_4045.html)
I'll want the white ones though eventually.
-
I received a Tiamo 3 hole ceramic 185 dripper with filters as a present. I really like the flat bottom 3 hole drippers and I remembered the white Kalita filters from the roadshow. The seemed to hold their shape a bit better than the tiamo filters, which according to Mr. Nick Cho is important for air insulation to maintain more even extraction temps. I have more than enough Tiamo filters to last assuming the Kalitas become available soon. Of course there is other prep methods if they don't...
-

There are two brown's left. And at least 50 whites, maybe closer to 75.

Great--thanks! Sounds like I'll be set for a while even if SYP goes on a pourover bender. ;)
-
I brewed up this El Salvador Cerro Las Ranas this morning and I did notice a bit of wood in the brew so I can't place all the blame on the Kantan.
I mislaid my AeroPress and scale over the weekend packing for our camping trip, so I tried out the Kantan brewer today at work using my El Salvador Cerro Las Ranas Pulped Natural roast. I'm getting a strong cardboard / paper taste, I forgot to pre-rinse the filter, or the coffee has gone woody, but I suspect the former. Brewed with ~16 grams coffee and ~ 250 ml water.
In my mind the Kantan would be used in the case of when one is traveling and doesn't want to haul around a bunch of coffee gear. Where you have to assume the source of hot water will be a way off temp hot water tap on a airpot/commercial brewer. Which is similar to my office and where I tested it. All I got was cardboard, and really I would have rather just had a cup of the standard office swill. Yes, I eyeballed the amount of coffee and water so....
I like the idea and would think that maybe it would come in handy someday. But really if I'm going to be carrying around coffee (even pre ground in ziplocks >:( ) I'll just carry around my aeropress too. Also like BlzrFan I don't like the amount of waste.
The Kalita wave though is a little rockstar of a brewer!

Thanks for posting this!! I ordered 200 because the shipping was the same and they got here ( to NJ) very quick from Maine ( I first thought they were in Portland,Oregon; I then realized they were in Maine).
-
Oh! I'd assumed OR, too. Nice!
-
Got it yesterday!
-
Cool. That white collar comes off of the carafe, right? Do people find it necessary/useful?
-
I left it on but would remove it to lean the unit. I also like the fact that removing the wire holder helps maintain some heat after pouring.
On my second pour over using some Brazil Candado. Compared to the Technivorm running a Swiss gold filter it provided a cleaner more complex cup that was very enjoyable. This was my first pour over experience so I cannot compare to others but I like the cup and will switch to a paper filter in the Technivorm to see if I can get close. It has been a while since I did this and as my palate has matured I might like paper filters more.
-
^^^ Right, I figured, but then again the first pics of the Style set in action in this thread show the carafe collarless. If you hold the carafe above the "coffee line," I gather it's not too hot?
-
Looks like Wrecking Ball has the #185 whites back in stock. They're also carrying this Style Set now.
-
^^^ Nice. Tangent: have you tried any of the coffees that Wrecking Ball is offering now? I'm overdue to check them out.
-
It's the end of the line for this road show package, which I found on my doorstep this afternoon. Thanks, everyone!
So far I've only played with the Wave set. Went with 21 g. of Stumptown's Finca Kilimanjaro and brewed about 350 g. worth of surprisingly good (for a first try) coffee in 3:10 or so. Think I'll fine up the grind a touch next time.
The filters are fiddly, aren't they? Guess I won't sweat it if I can't keep the pleats/waves perfectly, uh, wavy while rinsing.
-
Awesome, thats a wrap! I hope everyone enjoyed the roadshow, it seems like the reviews were very positive for yet another pourover method.
I ended up buying a flat bottomed stainless Tiamo from OE, and use it a few times a week. Chris is obviously a fan, JW was leaning that way, did anyone else on the roadshow end up buying a flat filter?
-
I picked up a ceramic Tiamo 185 flat bottom from Orphan Espresso. It has become my favorite pourover by far when I'm brewing small amounts. I did break down and buy a pouring kettle. I like the flat bottom much better than my V60 and I find it much more consistent.
I was very grateful for this roadshow!!

Glad it made it to everyone.
I found that if you set the filter in and drop a few drops into the bottom and then hold the edges of the filter from the top while rinsing that you can keep most if not all of the pleats (waves).
-
Sorry for the thread resurrection, but after some initial play time a while ago I'm only now cycling back to this Style Set. Got it nicely dialed in (coarser to the eye than I'd expected, but the tongue knows best) and have been enjoying quiet coffee with it at night once the kids are down. A few things...
- I like the tip Chris passed along on HB about using the Aeropress funnel to hold the filter in place while you wet it.
- Able's new "for Chemex" fits fine in the Style Set's server. Pic:
- I find smaller cups turn out well, at least by my under-informed pourover standards--specifically, 20 g. of coffee to 320 g. of water in 2:30-2:45 (including a roughly 30-sec. bloom). Am I way off?
-
Thanks.
About the funnel, another good way of preserving the paper filter's waves is to just not rinse, which I know you know Nick Cho recently said was his own preference. I'll try that and see if I can detect a difference tastewise.
-
I use Brew Rite/Pure Brew 2-4 cup Melitta basket style filters with my 155 Tiamo dripper - something to shape the filter is helpful since it is larger than a Kalita 155 filter but once the grounds are dumped it nests well - results (unwashed) are the same as what I taste using the much more expensive Kalita 155 filter.
