Title: New toys
Post by: YasBean on July 20, 2008, 04:44:35 AM
I just returned from Taiwan, and wanted to show & tell my new toys.  I just posted about my new grinder (photo 1) in http://www.greencoffeebuyingclub.com/index.php?topic=4145.0 (http://www.greencoffeebuyingclub.com/index.php?topic=4145.0).  I also bought a new butane burner (photo 2) for my Hario siphon.  I just don't like waiting for the alcohol burner.  It is far too slow.  This burner will bring the water up to temp very quickly, and if you fill it from camping stove butane, it is very cheap.  I sure did want to pick up one of those nice cold-drip set-ups, but luggage space and wife prevented me from doing so (this time ;)).

Thought we might keep this one alive as the thread for recently purchased toys or "toys yet to be..."

Peter, always in a mood to tip me over the 'buy' reluctance, sent along this dandy.  Needless to say, I added it to my Amazon cart and will obtain it once I hit the free shipping threshold.  It will be proudly displayed at the Best Palate in the Midwest Showdown in August.

I am running two seperate 6-week university study abroad programs.  Although the Taiwan program is much hotter, the super-duper coffee makes up for it.  I may try to work a trip to the Ah-li Shan (Mt. Ali) coffee plantation, this year, too.  Both good coffee and some of the best tea in the world all in one small area of the mountain!  Yummy!

Peter has a tracking number from Chris's Coffee, so I am trying to use the interim as a time to catch up in volume.  I have been after a ceramic pot somewhere in the 28 ounce range.  May have found it in this Melitta (Deutschland, naturlich) that Melitta used to be made for their 6-cup dripper.  Snagged a robin's egg blue one off eBay. I am betting a liter pot.  That would be poy-fect.

Need to get my 6-cup porcelain pourover to Peter for drilling.

Unless you are dwelling coffee in there (why would you do that), a good pre-heat ought to get you from brew to cup pretty good.

I have been giving this some thought.  Maybe someone will take up knitting and offer a group buy on "cozies," though we don't use that word in the upper Midwest.

If you are going to do a group buy.  I'd recommend using this area (http://www.greencoffeebuyingclub.com/index.php?board=16.0), start a new topic and do it formally.

Calculate shipping costs, etc.. as is normal for the club.

I'm sure there are quite a few folks who might want one of these.... depending on final price.

Back in Taiwan, and a new toy from Hario.  Note the spiral cone.  It has marks inside for 12 g. & 15 g. coffee grounds.  Too bad it is not SwissGold.  The bottom is to fit all sizes of cups, so this does not have a lid which could act as a seat when done, so I will need to have a plate or paper ready to put the filter on when the coffee has finished dripping.

An old Hearthware Precision from Stevieboy.  I would like to profile it out against the Gene.  If it cups well, use it for my sample roaster, where I could do three 80-gram samples at different levels.

Ol' Heat hit the porch last night.  I am going to run the same bean through it (75 grams) and work out a profile (length of time).  Then run that same bean against the Gene and the beast -- the RK.  I want to see if the Precision provides a bean that is adequate to use as a sample roaster (will run bright, I know). But if it flies, it is ideal to play with for roasting samples at a variety of levels.

Of course, I had to work late last night and came home to the box sitting on the dining room table and the Czarina sitting in the easy chair.  That arrangement left me with no choice of where to sit: the hot seat.

If that's all you want to do is roast samples to various levels, I will suggest a SC/TO and a metal spoon.  You can through a half lb. into it, when it hits C+ scoop out enough grams for your evaluation brew, let it progress to FC and do the same, and on and on.  Multiple roast levels for cupping out of one roasted sample.

Let me interpret what B|A_Toy_Lover is trying to say.  "Czarina I just wanted a new toy"...... "why do I need it?"  ..... "ah, ah I need..... a ah sample roaster... I needed a sample roaster"... yeh, that's it, a sample roaster."

That doesn't even begin to say it! Just ask Mrs T, she'll tell you it takes at least a garage full of stuff to make good coffee, plus the pieces on display in the house.

Poor girl, she never knew what hit her 20 - 30 years ago when I started getting heavily into espresso! >:D
