Flavored coffee beans run threw my Grindmaster 875
« on: April 19, 2012, 06:07:23 PM »
Left town for a week, when I came back somebody run some flavored coffee beans threw my grinder, OMG what a terrible sweet smell in my Grinder. Anybody out there have any ideas to remove it. I have already removed the burrs cleaned with soap and water washed bean bin and the smell is still there not as bad though. Any idea I sure would appreciate it. Rich

I would throw mine too if flavored beans went through it.

I know there was a thread on this a long time ago and I can't find it. Or maybe it was on a mailing list. I can't remember there being a solution but there must be. I know somebody tried the dry rice thing and that didn't work. If nothing comes up here I would search on Coffee Geek.

I would srip it down and soak the removable parts in oxyclean.

Then put it back together and run some rice through it.

Thanks everybody for the ideas, I will try soaking the bean bin in ammonia sounds like a good idea, also I will tear it down again and scrub like crazy then run some low end beans threw it just for s--ts and grins. just hope I can get it back to normal, I guess I could call Grindmaster and see what they recommend. Yeah, call Tony to have the person permanently removed.

To get rid of the grinder's smell I 2nd John's advice - strip it and soak it in oxyclean. I cleaned up a grinder l that I thought I was going to have toss that had a rancid hazelnut smell.

Ammonia might damage the plastic surface, so try it on a hidden spot first; but it will get rid of the smell.

At least with the parts you can remove. What about homebrew cleaner B-Brite? Let the parts soak for like 20 minutes and then rinse with cold water.   Also maybe make up a thick paste, like you would with Joe-gloe, and use that with a toothbrush in the tight spots.

OK, the Oxyclean and the ammonia seems to work what a pain, thanks everybody for the input. I am putting a label on the front of it hopefully this won't happen again. Run 3 pounds threw it my Yirga tasted great.

I hope the label says something along the line of "Under penalty of death" or "We don't dial 911"...

All grain alcohol like Everclear is good for dissolving the nasty oils they use to flavor coffee beans. Then you could have had hazelnut infused alcohol - there might be a drink recipe out there for that...

Glad you got it cleaned up.
