Best Electric Burr Grinder Under $150?
« on: April 09, 2014, 05:55:38 AM »
My dinky (but efficient) little Bodum burr grinder is jammed because of some tiny plastic piece that broke off of the top cone. Repair attempts are ongoing, but I don't want to wait too long. What's the best burr grinder to replace it that's not more than $150? All I make is French press coffee, never espresso.

Thanks very much.

Best electric grinder for under $150 that I've tried is the Baratza Encore.  It grinds awesome for drip and can go course enough for road gravel and fine enough if re calibrated to choke my Silvia.  $130. Honestly tho if your just drinking press than almost any burr grinder will do. I use a Grindmaster 875 for my drip and press which is probably one of the largest grinders out there lol.. But I was able to pick it up for $125 used.

The Encore does look very good for the price. I was able to remove the plastic piece blocking the burrs on my Bodum. It should work, but I have not yet tried it with coffee.

I hate to play the "for a few dollars more" game but...

Mine is 12 or 13 years old.  These things are built like tanks-- no plastic pieces.

(NOT an espresso grinder but that should go without saying at this price point)

I can believe that a 12 or 13 year old Kitchen Aid grinder is built like a tank. But I don't believe that about the new ones and don't trust that brand.

I bought one new a few years ago, and it was a tank.  I liked that static electicity was a non-issue, but retention was higher than I'd have liked.

$120 shipped for this Encore on eBay; http://preview.tinyurl.com/n4q5gjv

Retention? Is that when you look at something and then look at it again?

Yes, precisely.
