POLL: How many beans in your grinder?
« on: March 22, 2011, 10:24:47 AM »
I switch between coffees very frequently, lately I have been cupping 7 or 8 at a time after roasting.  Espresso is the same, I like to keep small amounts of 3 or 4 different kinds, and try most roasts (within reason) as espresso.  Is keeping the hopper filled with more than what you are needing to grind at the moment worth the coffee waste, extra hassle, and weighing complexities?

That is a good question.

I think it would depend on certain factors.

Do you do a post roast blend or pre roast blend?

How much coffee do you consume in a week?

Do you like having different origins available and mix at the last moment before grinding?

Whether you pre or post blend do you have different roasts of the same beans?

Do you have a grinder that does incremental adjustment or stepped?

It could depend on a lot of things!  How about you, mp?

I roast a week's worth of coffee at a time, and I keep it in the bean hopper of my espresso grinder. If I roast a sample it'll be brewed in a vac pot, pour over, or AP, so I keep these beans in a jar and grind as needed in the Saeco Titan.

As for the need to keep the hopper empty so I can switch beans, why bother? If the beans are good I don't mind drinking them for a week. If they're not good why keep them at all - into the trash with them!

I put in enough for the next shot.

(I assume you are talking espresso ... I have another grinder for drip.)

None!
I make two pots of drip per day, and I weigh every 66 gram grinder load...

My wife dumps most of the canister into the hopper in the morning before pulling some shots and I dump them back in after I'm done with mine.

I'd complain but she's got this smoking hotness thing going that covers a multitude of sins.  ;)

A sinfully good-looking woman is forgiven many minor transgressions, just as she's appreciated for the major ones.  ;D

Same grinder for all brew methods, weigh and grind for each press/pourover/pull; the three P's at the Schmidt house.  8)  At least three coffee origins per day.
