Bonavita Automatic Brewer - 1st Look
« on: December 08, 2011, 10:02:03 AM »
I had the opportunity to try on of these Bonavita Automatic Brewer coffee makers recently and I like what I find.  This design has been available for a while overseas named as the Melitta Aroma Excellence. The coffee maker looks nice with a brushed steel exterior and a blue tinted water reservoir and black trim.  The design is simple - a switch to turn the unit on with a built in 2 hour cut off for the glass carafe model.

The water path to the shower head does not come in contact with the water in the reservoir - similar to the Technivorm, Melitta Clarity, and my old Hamilton Beach Scovill 10 cup brewer - it is no coincidence all these machines will deliver correct water temps to the coffee ground bed.

The shower head is large and does a great job saturating the grounds too

The grounds holder is as simple as it gets - an open #4 cone (not sure why the other photo was removed)

The distribution is good too

The water starts flowing quickly for this 1450 watt brewer - after less than a minute temps in the slurry are registering 203 - 204 with my digital thermometer. The brew process takes around 5 minutes for a liter and 65g light roasted coffee.  Half the price of a new Technivorm with similar specs - nice.

I talked to these guys at Coffee Fest.  total engineers, that love coffee.  I asked if they would consider a PID version that you could set the temperature... they said..... hmmmm maybe next year.

I'm on the list for one of the curren thermal pot brewers.  Bonavita says they should arrive in the USA later this month.  I may try to put together a group buy, but in discussions with them they want a minimum of a Palate....  Retail price will be $149  These are SCAA approved brewers.

Hmm ... that sounds interesting.

I wonder what price Larry can get for a group buy.

It would be worth it for $75.00 a pot.

That thermal carafe unit looks good, but they have only a 40 oz. capacity.  My Capresso MT-500 goes for 50 ounces and is still working just fine.

I hear you - I like the MT-500 too, but this one is nice and available now.  The Capresso MT-500 is D/C'd.

Just picked up one of the glass carafe versions to test out for a convenience oriented family member.

The box has a printed 1400 watt heater claim, (German engineered!) so I will put it on the kill-a-watt, time the cycle, thermocouple the basket,  and refractometer the result.  Plus it has to taste good with a whirly blade.

Results tomorrow!

Looked at the Bunn HT, SCAA approved yesterday, on display at our local roaster.  Very clean lines, would look attractive on the kitchen granite.  Light, sharp.  Just curious, not buying.
