How Loud Is a "Quiet" Grinder?
« on: May 26, 2013, 11:07:35 AM »
I have a Breville Smart grinder.  According to several online reviews it is supposed to be a very quiet grinder and capable of easily doing espresso grinds.  Mine howls like a kayote only louder.  The finer the grind the higher the pitch.  I wonder if there is something wrong and I need to get to customer service.  Mine has severe plugging problems when oily beans are ground.  So I  purchased some long brushes from a medical supplier that are supposed to be used on cannulas.  I have to force one to get it all through the narrow path that grinds must get through even when I remove the burrs (I have left the rotary burr in place at times but the upper is always out.

I don't think any are especially quiet. Just that some are particularly loud.

Are you positive that there isn't a stone or something jammed in there?

Check out this youtube video comparing the db's from a variety of grinders including your Breville to see if yours sounds significantly different.

grinderz, yesterday I tried to post a thank you for the link and to tell you that I found out a lot more by looking at other info shows that were displayed at that link.  I believe my grinder sounds louder that their Breville, but now I think it is because we have such a small kitchen and reflective surfaces everywhere.  Mine is a lot higher pitched when set to do espresso too.  I had to add shims to the lower burr to get it fine enough even though it was supposed to be one of the newer ones that did not need them.  Its funny they never get a mention here when grinders are discussed.  At the site in Seattle where the utube video was made they seemed to really like them.  As for the thread robbers, the only thing that annoyed me about your funny posts was that I was trying to post a thank you to grinderz and the site wouldn't accept my post because it said there were more new posts to read, but they were apparently in process because after I read all that I could find, it still dropped mine.
