If you use a Baratza Maestro or Virtuoso for espresso you should look at this. It looks like something a hacker like me would come up with!

note: This does not mean I endorse the Baratza grinders as espresso grinders.

Pertaining to coffee equipment only! :angel:

But this looks cool - make the Baratza into a simpler machine to use.

I don't understand that hack at all.  It destroys the hopper, for one thing.  Apart from that, the grinder will run w/o the hopper in place, so why not just use it with no hopper, achieving the same result?

Why is a hacked hopper more cool that using it w/o a hopper?  How cool is wanting to use that grinder for another brewing method, but then not being able too?   8)

Not shown in the photo Tex posted it's another hopper with a portafilter holder built in... holds the portafilter and catches excess.... I wish my rossi caught the overflowing ground like that....  so you can use the grinder for multiple uses.

It looks like the PortaHolder includes a replacement hopper that replaces the stock item - to go back to stock just swap the PortaHolder for the stock hopper. The mod holds the PF and contains the unused grounds - it should simplify clean up.

I see, said the blind man!  That is cool.

I need one of those to go w/ the GS3 Santa's bringing me.  That would be a good one; a $5K espresso machine, and a Baratza...   ;D

Maybe next they'll get rid of the plastic burr carriers!

You're probably looking at a Swift to pair with the GS3, but a friend has a Baratza Vario on order. I'm looking forward to playing with it. The Mahlkönig ceramic burrs are interesting, it has a PortaHolder, and the grinder is still pretty small.

~~~Keep me abreast of that Tex..if you get a chance to play with the Vario.  My MD-50 is a very good grinder but I'm interested in the automatic features, like dosing, etc.  Still...it's $400+ and my wallet is a little short
And, what about the burr carriers, are they plastic on the Vario?, if you know
I've looked at all the pics of the Vario and it does look like it has plastic carriers. I sent them an email for clarification.
It looks like they took all the automation from the Swift, with the exception of the tamping. The Vario is certainly an interesting looking grinder.
